This year, a new Feast Day is being added to the ecumenical lectionary calendar. It is a once-in-a-lifetime event and worth paying attention to. The Creation Justice Movement Worship Team offer these materials so congregations can easily find resources for honoring the change during worship, when teaching about the change in small groups and classes, and to facilitate reflecting on the importance of this moment for the new Feast.
The Feast of Creation is being added to the lectionary in 2026, during a time of crisis for the environment and those who depend on it for life, which is all of us. The climate is changing due to the actions of humans who have changed the make-up of the atmosphere and concentrated gases that trap energy near the Earth’s surface. This change in the atmosphere is changing patterns for storms, fires, precipitation, forests, and ocean currents everywhere. It’s even changing the ways that people can grow food and raise families. So caring for Creation and working for justice for those most impacted by the changes to Creation’s patterns has never been more timely or important. Now is the moment for the new Feast of Creation.
