JUSTice Highlights - April 22, 2024
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear …
(1John 18:2)
General Conference itself officially begins tomorrow, Tuesday, but the Love Your Neighbor Coalition (LYNC) has been busy these days before the conference. In addition to setting up meeting space and an exhibit hall booth, LYNC co-hosted a World Wide Worship on Sunday afternoon and began setting up a World Craft Market in the Hilton Garden Inn.
Today is Earth Day and our coalition partner United Methodist Creation Justice Ministry is hosting an event tonight.
All this is part of LYNC’s expression of love and the hope that the United Methodist Church can focus on its historical commitment to justice around the world and renew a commitment for inclusion for all of God’s children.
Chaplains offer Care at General Conference and Virtually
Beginning Tuesday, April 23, a team of chaplains will be standing by to help those who may be dealing with challenges at the General Conference or as they watch online. No one needs to feel alone if the struggles of the church trigger issues that need to be talked through with a chaplain. There are three ways people can connect with a chaplain:
By calling/texting a hotline. Chaplains will be ready to listen, as you talk through the challenges of being at General Conference: 424-467-9462.
In person with Chaplain team volunteers who will be in Charlotte during General Conference, wearing buttons that identify them as chaplains.
By logging on to the Gather Town virtual church space, hosted by the Young Prophets Collective. YPC volunteers will be present during regular hours to greet people and let them into the virtual space. RSVP here to get login information.
Translation Opens Doors
Removing, or at least reducing the barrier of language is one part of this outreach and relationship building. So, LYNC has made translation a key part of its focus at the General Conference. Today, Sunday, a team of translators from around the world gathered for their orientation session and updates on their work. They will help with casual one-on-one conversations and group gatherings outside the realm of the official General Conference business. Read more on the LYNC website.
